There is a strong possibility more coaches may be applying soon, with the deadline fixed for mid-February. As India do not have any major competitions coming up immediately, it should be no surprise if the deadline for receiving applications is extended to the end of February.Coaches from Germany, Belgium, and Australia have shown interest in the job with the Indian team, though there is such a long way before the contract is handed out. With Hockey India in a position to shortlist candidates and forward names to the Sports Authority of India, many pre-conditions have been laid out.Notably, one of them is that the coach is fluent in English so that communication with the players will not be a problem.Hockey India has ruled out any further musical chairs wherein current women’s coach Sjoerd Marijne is shifted back to the men’s team. With the Indian women’s team also doing well in recent tournaments and preparing for the Tokyo Olympics qualifiers, Marijne will stay put with them.With news of Terry Walsh being fired by the Malaysian Hockey Federation, there is speculation if he could again be part of the Indian hockey system. Walsh was removed after Roelant Oltmans joined the Malaysian Hockey Federation. However, at this point of time, Hockey India is not even thinking about Walsh as he had let after a showdown.advertisementWith most Indian sporting disciplines now at a stage where they are preparing or readying for the Olympic qualifiers, hockey still has time before actual action begins. This time, Hockey India wants to get a coach who has the calibre and will be able to soak in the pressure.After India lost in the quarter-final stage in the FIH World Cup in Bhubaneshwar last December, Harendra Singh was moved out.
