first_img Aug. 31, 2007   Box Score      FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaskan air didn’t cool off the UWF Volleyball team, as they posted a 30-25, 30-18, 30-24 win over Humboldt State in the opening match of the Nanook Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska. Junior Outside Hitter Kimberly Clark paced the offense with 14 kills, and setter Madeline Gonzalez had 41 Assists, as the Argos offense proved too strong for Humboldt State. “They had a hard time stopping our offense, and Maddie (Gonzalez) distributed the ball real well, which made us very efficient on offense,” explained Head Coach Melissa Wolter. She added, “Kim (Clark) had a really nice match as well.”Helping Clark with the offensive attack was Senior Danielle Spitzer (7 kills, 4 blocks), Junior Luciana Rapach (7 kills), Senior Isabela Gualberto (7 kills), and Freshmen Chelsea Wilhoite (6 kills). Defensively, the numbers showed a balanced team effort also, as Rapach (12 digs), Clark (8 digs), and Gonzalez (8 digs), lead the way for the Argos. The victory puts UWF at 5-0 for the young season, While Humboldt State drops to 3-3.The Argos with nearly an entire day of travel, and one day to acclimatize, appeared to not be affected by the unusual travel. Overall, Wolter thought the team adapted real well to the different environment and climate and was very pleased. However, the Argos real test is playing two Matches tomorrow (Saturday) against Alaska-Fairbanks and Hawaii-Hilo. Game times are 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM Central time. The players have decided to put together a summary of the trip, and below is the first day entry from Isabela Gualberto:August 29 – The first day: We left our home town (Pensacola) this past Wednesday to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity. Knowing that we would encounter good competition in Alaska had the whole entire team anxious and excited. Being an Argo is not an easy task, as Coach Melissa Wolter does not waist time. She knew we were not going to have time to practice that Wednesday because we were going to be traveling the entire day, and for that same reason, she scheduled a 6:15 am training session. We left the Pensacola airport at 11:50 am., and had two connecting flights to Alaska with stops in Atlanta and Salt Lake City, Utah. The first flight was only one hour. We landed at Atlanta at 2:01 pm., and we ate lunch as a team at Atlanta’s airport, and got to see Big Boy the famous Rapper from Outkast. Then, we left Atlanta for Salt Lake City, and then, finally, we made it to Alaska at midnight – and the sun had just set!! We had pictured Alaska one way, but when we got there, we found a big surprise: no snow!! Apparently, we all thought Alaska was going to be covered in ice. We got to see some cool things at the airport like the polar bear. Then we got to our hotel and we met our host Danny…and finally, we went to bed.
