first_imgFemale artists were on Thursday urged at the Guyana Women Artists Association (GWAA) 31st annual art exhibition by Public Telecommunications Minister Catherine Hughes to take full advantage of the opportunities that the future presents.One of the paintings on displayThe exhibition was hosted at Arthur Chung Convention Centre.According to the Minister, she applauds the Association for their continuous work and dedication. She said that she believes that all their efforts have paid off because of their “stick-to-itiveness” and being one of the oldest art associations not only in Guyana but in the Caribbean.“This, to me, is the greatest evidence of your perseverance and determination to keep believing in the importance of art, artistry and the creative industry in all of our lives,” she said.However, she said that even though there is love for art, the industry needs to be transformed into a remunerative one.Meanwhile, she said as Guyana is approaching its first year of oil and gas production, many opportunities will present its self. She explained that with many companies establishing offices in Guyana, artists should market themselves to have their work displayed in these buildings.Minister Hughes also suggested that with the holidays now approaching, the females should take into consideration gifting a one-of-a-kind piece from the art pieces on display.Furthermore, President of the GWAA, Carol Fraser explained that the event was themed “Rhythm of our Journey II” because of the vision of their founders as it presented the progress of the artists’ work.Nevertheless, the Association was founded in 1987 and hosted its first exhibition in 1988.last_img read more
