first_imgFormer India cricket captain Ajit Wadekar was cremated at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Mumbai on Friday with full state honours.Wadekar, who had led India to their first victory in West Indies and England in 1971, had died at a South Mumbai hospital on August 15 after a prolonged illness.An aggressive left-handed batsman, Wadekar made his first-class debut in 1958-59 but did not play for India until 1966-67.Wadekar served Indian cricket in different capacities — as manager, coach and a selector. A batsman par excellence, he was also the first to captain India in the One-Day Internationals.Farewell Ajit Wadekar: Captain Courageous, Gutsy ManagerWadekar’s body was kept at his Worli residence this morning for his well-wishers to pay their tributes.Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Sameer Dighe, former hockey captain MM Somaiya and past and present officials of the Mumbai Cricket Association offered their prayers and condolences.BCCI General Manager (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim also paid tributes on behalf of the cricket board.Politicians cutting across party lines, including Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut also offered their prayers.Ajit Wadekar brought out the best in us in 1990s: Sachin TendulkarWadekar’s body was then taken to the Shivaji Park Gymkhana (SPG) in Dadar in Central Mumbai in an open truck. He was also a great fielder in the slip cordon.Wadekar took over as captain of the Indian team from MAK Pataudi and proved to be a good leader of men. After leading the country to memorable series wins in the West Indies and England, Wadekar oversaw another series win over England in 1972-73, at home.However, Wadekar had to retire after India were blanked 3-0 on the tour of England in 1974.Wadekar also served as India manager in the 1990s and enjoyed a successful stint with then captain Mohammad Azharuddin.
